I have always loved movies--so much so, that I pestered the heck out of Great Escape Theater to get my first job there--but I've never really written reviews about them. I wrote a single review of The Golden Compass back in 2007 for my high school newspaper, and though I enjoyed writing it, I didn't get any high praises for it. Since then, I've just been watching movies and debating their merits for the fun of it with friends and family.
Recently I had someone tell me that I could write movie reviews, that they thought that old article was something special. I pulled it out, blew off the dust, and gave it a read. It really wasn't that bad (despite the wonderful cliche at the end).
So I'm giving this a shot! Mostly for fun, but also to better my writing. For the fun part--I'm not gonna be one of those critics who sits during the movie taking notes over every detail. If it's important enough to be mentioned in the blog, I'll remember it, but I'm paying good money to get lost in the story, and that's just what I plan to do! For the bettering-my-writing part--I'm going to have somewhat of a format that I stick to with each post. One thing in particular, after I write my review I'm going to look up other reviews about the movie and post links to them on my site. That way, my review's not influenced by what others think, but at the same time I can see what the professionals write about and hopefully improve my own reviews while at the same time providing multiple opinions on a movie for my readers.
I hope you enjoy this little experiment with my writing. I know I will!
